Virginia Delegate Emily Brewer's Controversial Stance on Health Care and Abortion Draws Sharp Criticism

Freedom Virginia News | October 12, 2023

Virginia Delegate Emily Brewer's recent statements and legislative actions regarding health care and abortion have ignited a firestorm of controversy and criticism among constituents and advocacy groups in the Commonwealth. Brewer's remarks and voting record have raised serious concerns, with many labeling her approach as extreme and divisive.

In a Republican Candidate Forum on April 13, 2023, Brewer's comments about Planned Parenthood sent shockwaves through the community. She referred to the organization as "basically a terrorist organization," alleging that it "hunts down Democrats and even Republicans."

Brewer has also been outspoken about her pro-life stance, asserting she is "pro-life at the moment of conception." When questioned about exceptions to a total abortion ban, Brewer maintained that she believes "life begins at conception," indicating that she would support no exceptions. Her unwavering position on this issue has alarmed those who argue for reproductive rights and women's health.

Further fueling the controversy, Brewer celebrated the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and pledged to sponsor legislation aimed at restricting abortion. This position has alarmed advocates for reproductive rights, who worry about the potential erosion of long-established protections for women's reproductive health.

In the realm of healthcare policy, Brewer's history includes opposition to Medicaid expansion, which has provided access to healthcare for thousands of low-income Virginians. She referred to it as "expanding the failed Obamacare system" and expressed concerns about federal funding. However, her stance stands in contrast to the experiences of many states where Medicaid expansion has proven effective in increasing access to healthcare services for underserved populations.

Critics argue that Brewer's positions on both health care and abortion appear extreme and are out of touch with the needs and values of many Virginians. They express concerns about the potential consequences of her stances on these critical issues, especially regarding women's reproductive rights and access to healthcare for the most vulnerable members of society.

As the political debate continues, it remains to be seen how Brewer's divisive views on health care and abortion will affect her standing among constituents and in the Virginia House of Delegates.
